Night Swimming / Story guide

Who's who, and what's where

The people, places and things in Night Swimming. Every card starts with what you'd know when they first turn up. Anything later is folded under a spoiler.

Characters

character

Jason Amano

Seventeen-year-old weed dealer and the crew's organizer

A teenage dealer who works out of the back room at Qball's and knows every exit in every room. When the shadows start moving on Christmas Eve 1999, he is the one who gets everybody out.

First appears: Chapter 1, First Sparks - The Trip

Spoilers

Jason treats every problem like a business deal, and he turns his customer list into a statewide network of cells to fight the extraction. That habit costs him: he places Josh alone on the east perimeter because he seems unstable, and Josh is taken. He admits he treated a friend like a resource, breaks down in the swamp, and leads the rest of the way by the rule that nobody fights alone. He falls for Katie, faces the ancient presence with her at the forest nexus, and six months later is still keeping watch from the same pool table.

character

Katie Corset

Runaway, swimmer, and the crew's survivor

A seventeen-year-old who lives alone in motel rooms, swims in December, and has been buying weed from Jason for two years. She always carries a flashlight and never lets anyone stand behind her.

First appears: Chapter 1, First Sparks - The Trip

Spoilers

Katie left her last foster placement six months before the story after fighting off Foster Dad #4 with a cast iron skillet, and she has never told the crew. She goes into Silver Springs first and receives the vision of what is coming at midnight on New Year's Eve. She is the one who calls out Jason for leaving Josh alone. She and Jason fall in love, face the ancient presence together, and she overloads her flashlight to blow apart a consciousness node.

character

Josh Morgan

Chemist, dealer, and the crew's bitter genius

A chemistry whiz who has won the science fair three years running and sells at Qball's. He is quietly in love with Katie and not happy about how Silver Springs went.

First appears: Chapter 1, First Sparks - The Trip

Spoilers

Josh brews a shadow-killing compound in his garage out of stolen lab supplies, heartbreak, and his own blood, and his reflection climbs out of a steel pot to talk to him. As the week goes on he is cut off from the crew by interference and his own isolation. On the east perimeter at Mickey's he is taken by a shadow wearing his face, and his friends keep his chair empty. Later chapters call him Josh Thompson and remember him as an artist; a construct claims his consciousness now serves the presence.

character

Shadow-Josh

Josh's reflection, given a body

The reflection in Josh's steel pot that grins with too many teeth, then climbs out and talks to him in his own voice.

First appears: Chapter 3, The Morning After

Spoilers

It tells Josh his chemistry will work and dissolves when he throws the compound at it. It returns during the shadow war wearing Josh's face, claims his vials were feeding it all along, and takes him. Afterward it taunts Jason and Katie and promises to see them on New Year's Eve.

character

Dom Russo

Jason's business partner and the crew's reality check

Jason's partner in the weed business, always with a joint behind his ear and a calm read on things. He has a cousin in Miami and the use of his uncle's van.

Spoilers

Dom supplies transport, junkyard parts, and blunt judgment. He bonds with Josh over heartbreak behind an abandoned Kmart, and after Josh is taken he is the one who says there is a difference between breaking and being taken. Six months on she has left UF, stopped swimming, and works at a sporting goods store in Gainesville.

character

Amanda Diaz

The crew's organizer and record keeper

A Puerto Rican high schooler who keeps her family running between her parents' opposite shifts and looks after her twelve-year-old sister, Maria. Lists and notebooks are how she handles chaos.

First appears: Chapter 1, First Sparks - The Trip

Spoilers

Amanda treats the strangeness like a project, mapping incidents and starting a Comprehensive Database of Supernatural Infrastructure Infiltration. Six months later he is at FSU on scholarship, sees Josh in static and reflections, and calls Jason at 3 AM.

Mickey turns out to be a Vietnam veteran living in a cabin on stilts deep in the Ocala National Forest, who has tracked the entities since his unit met them in the war. He teaches the crew that light and connection are the weapons and holds the swamp line with them during the shadow war. After Josh is taken he tells Jason about the soldier he lost and that real leaders break. The text is not consistent about him: other chapters call him Mickey Nguyen or Mickey Chen, and one early chapter places him in Orlando's rave scene in his mid-twenties.

Amanda's mother, who works opposite shifts from Amanda's father and can tell when her daughter is dodging a question. She warns that some things are better left alone.

First appears: Chapter 5, Late Night Expeditions

Spoilers

Hours before midnight on New Year's Eve she catches Amanda at home, admits she has seen the shadows through her patients, and makes her promise to come back.
