Synchronicity / Story guide

The plan

The plan for Synchronicity: who's in it, where it happens, and how the story is meant to go. Nothing's written yet, so all of this will change as it gets written. Anything past the setup is folded under a spoiler.

Characters

character

Griffin "Duo" Rockwell II

Seventeen-year-old lead pilot of the Epoch Project

Duo is seventeen, the lead pilot of the first team of time jumpers, and a clone of the scientist who built the time machine. He's ambitious, confident and a little reckless, and he carries the weight of living up to his original.

Spoilers

He leads the team's repair missions into the past and learns how little the Chrono-Censor lets them change. Then he meets an older version of himself who has mastered time and wants it undone, and has to stop his own future self from collapsing the timeline. Underneath it is the fear of becoming that man. The final fight happens inside the black-hole core, the one place where a time traveler can really die.

character

Gwyneth "Gwen" Anderson

Psychic pilot who sees twenty seconds ahead

Gwen is nineteen, quiet and introspective, and she can see twenty seconds into the future. She guides the team through missions with it, and she rarely speaks.

Spoilers

The constant flow of visions overwhelms her, and time travel may amplify or destabilize them further. What she wants is peace, a life without the burden. She gets it at a price: when the team is tethered back to the present and the cosmic balance realigns, she loses her powers.

character

Chance

Android from the future; the team's recorder

Chance, designation AIMEE VI, is an android from the future who was found on a jump and refitted to record time events. She looks young, can shift her apparent age, and starts out logical and detached.

Spoilers

As she works with the team, her neural circuits evolve and she begins to feel things she doesn't understand. She wants to know what being human means and where she fits in the timeline. In the final jump she's critically damaged, and the rewiring leaves her more human than before.

character

Ethan "King" Kingsley

Cyborg ex-Special Forces soldier; the team's protector

Ethan is nineteen, a cyborg with a Special Forces background who gets refitted for every future jump. He's tough and disciplined, takes the most dangerous jobs, and hides how much he cares about the others.

Spoilers

He wants to prove that even with his cybernetics he is still a man capable of emotion and loyalty. He proves it in the final jump, when he sacrifices himself for the team.

character

The older Duo

Duo's future self; the antagonist

A future version of Duo who has mastered time. He can speed it up, slow it down or stop it, and he is always a step ahead of the team.

Spoilers

He became "Post-Tethered" and then "Free-Tethered", able to tether himself at will and slip past the Chrono-Censor. Having seen what time travel does, he's determined to erase it from existence, even if that means killing his younger self, which he can only do inside the black hole, where the Censor doesn't reach. In the end he destroys the fusion core inside the black hole and seals time travel forever. The early notes gave him the codename Deus Ex Machina, for the way he drives the story from outside it.

character

The inventor

The scientist who built the time machine

In 2023 a scientist builds the first working time machine, and the moment it switches on, linear time stops being something anyone can count on. Duo is his clone.

Spoilers

The government seizes his machine almost at once and builds the Epoch Project around it. In the early brainstorm the older Duo's endgame reaches back to him and his machine directly.

Places

place · real

The Voltaire

The Epoch Project's underground facility

An underground facility below Alexandria, Virginia, where the pilots live and train and the time machine is housed.

In real life

Alexandria is a real city in Northern Virginia on the west bank of the Potomac River, bordering Washington, D.C. Founded as a port town in 1749, it's known for its Old Town historic district. The facility beneath it is invented.

Spoilers

The earliest brainstorm put the program at Area 51 in Nevada instead; the bible settles on the Voltaire.

Things

thing

The black hole core

The engine of the time machine

The machine is a contained micro black hole powered by fusion. It opens the slots the pilots jump through, and it's highly unstable.

Spoilers

The Chrono-Censor doesn't exist inside it, which makes it the one place a time traveler can truly be killed, and the place the final battle is set. Destroying the core ends time travel forever, and in the story's Cosmic Reset, nuclear energy and black holes stop existing with it.

thing

The Chrono-Censor

The force that protects the timeline

A cosmic force that auto-corrects big changes to the past. You can chip history onto a new path, but you can't kill someone important or stop a major event.

Spoilers

It keeps the missions small and forces the team to find subtle ways to change things. The older Duo has learned to bypass it, and it has no power inside the black hole.

thing

The open slots

The central mystery

The pilots can't jump to any future point until someone has already come back from it and opened a slot. Someone has been opening slots for them.

Spoilers

Finding out who is opening them, and why, drives the team toward the discovery that they are not the only ones jumping through time.

thing

Tethering

The team's one-shot recall

A pull that yanks the whole team back to their original present. Nobody knows what else it does, or whether it will even work, and it can only be done once.

Spoilers

When it finally works, the side effects are severe: Ethan dies, Chance is rewired into something more human, and Gwen loses her powers. The older Duo has gone past it to "Free-Tethering", tethering at will.

thing

The 2006 lab fire

The team's first mission

The first mission sends the team back to a lab fire in 2006 to retrieve documents before they burn.

Spoilers

The fire turns out to have been set on purpose, to hide something, and it's the first sign that the timeline has been tampered with by someone other than them.

Groups

group

The Epoch Project

The secret government time-travel program

The top-secret program the government sets up after it seizes the time machine. Because adult minds can't hold what a jump requires, it trains teenagers under nineteen to make the jumps.

Spoilers

Its first team is Duo, Gwen, Chance and Ethan, the first four able to jump. Its job is repair work on a fragile timeline, and its missions keep revealing costs nobody planned for.

Story beats

Show the planned beatsSpoilers for the whole plan

Act One: The Birth of Time Travel

  1. The machine switches on

In 2023 a scientist builds a working time machine, and the moment it activates, linear time stops holding.

  2. The government takes over

The machine is seized and folded into a top-secret program, the Epoch Project.

  3. Pilots under nineteen

Adults can't hold up under a jump, so the program trains teenagers, and Duo, the inventor's clone, readies his team to repair the timeline.

Act Two: Time Jumps and Unseen Consequences

  1. The 2006 lab fire

The first mission sends the team back to retrieve documents from a lab fire, which turns out to have been set on purpose.

  2. The Chrono-Censor

Every drastic change they try is blocked, so they learn to chip at history with small, careful moves.

  3. Someone opened the slots

They realize an unknown force has already opened slots in time for them, and that they aren't the only ones jumping.

Act Three: The Rise of the Post-Tethered

  1. The older Duo

The team meets a future Duo who has mastered time, slips past the Censor and can speed, slow or stop time.

  2. Un-inventing time travel

His goal is to stop time travel from ever existing before it destroys reality, and he's willing to kill his younger self to do it.

  3. Protect the core

As he works to dismantle the machine, the team fights to keep him from collapsing the timeline by destroying its core.

Act Four: The Final Jump

  1. The tether

Tethering pulls the whole team back to the present, at a cost.

  2. What it costs

Ethan sacrifices himself, Chance is critically damaged and grows more human, and Gwen loses her powers as the cosmic balance realigns.

  3. Inside the black hole

Duo faces his older self inside the black hole core, where the Censor doesn't exist and either of them can die.

Act Five: The Cosmic Reset

  1. The core is destroyed

The older Duo destroys the fusion core inside the black hole, sealing off time travel forever.

  2. A simpler world

The timeline resets, nuclear energy and black holes cease to exist, and the survivors have to live in the world their choices made.
